Really had trouble with this one (LDB4-1956-003E). The first pic was shot with my normal setup (Canon 100mm macro, f11) and the second and third was with my homemade axial setup. Tried the axial after reading all the posts about shooting toned coins. It got the tone pretty good except the luster of the coin was lost as compared to the first shot. In hand, the coin almost glows blue/purple and has some hints of red. Any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated.

Axial (at least "pure axial") results in zero luster presentation. With your axial setup, can you angle the lights a little to get some non-axial content that would excite some luster?

I'll try that later and post results.

rmpsrmps-here we go. My setup is clearly not a true axial. My glass angle is good, but I am shooting through plate rather than beam splitter. After I put up my diffuser, the coin is dark, I have to focus before I put up the diffuser. I also adjusted the saturation to 2 which impacted the color. End result-beginning to pick up some of the tone and better luster but still not representative of the coin. I'm going to make some adjustments in my setup tomorrow to help my focus (didn't use Z-stage) and try again.

Not sure whether you have axial lighting set up correctly. There is some (stray?) light from the 12 o'clock direction. From my experience, the field of your coin in the photo does not have the typical "lit up" look. Here are a couple of pictures I took with axial lighting.

As Ray said, axial lighting alone will not bring out luster. Luster can be achieved by adding another light. The following photo was taken with axial lighting AND another light at 2 o'clock.

This is axial lighting only, which fully brings out toning:

This picture was taken with axial lighting + direct lighting:

I have to correct my posts from yesterday. I tried axial lighting on a beaten up Lincoln Penny and it does not look good:

The color is way off. It seem that the reflected light hides the color.

The following picture is what it looks like in hand. It was taken with normal diffused lighting.
