Just a quick note for anyone who does use the NGC registry. Previously, they had allowed both PCGS and NGC in their registry.
From the email I received today, they won't be accepting MORE PCGS after January 1st. If you already have your PCGS registered in their system prior to that date, they won't be kicked out, but that fun ends Jan. 1.

Saw the message. I have 10-12 NGC Registry Set, all mixed NGC/PCGS. I'll be removing them. No way am I spending the bucks to do an PCGS/NGC crossover. Experience shows that many won't cross over.
I've got to see if I can find a way to register a complaint at NGC.

I'm tempted to say "petty bickering", but I suppose they had to make the break at some point. It does make sense.

The letter from Salzberg was self-righteous and hypocritical. He bashes "the other" grading companies for allegedly relaxing or lowering their standards, using this as justification for banning them from future NGC Set Registry inclusion, yet he ignores the fact that gradeflation, market grading, mis-attribution, and lowered standards have also affected NGC as much as any other TPG. For every PCGS coin that's incorrectly graded you can find the same coin incorrectly graded in an NGC holder. Kanga, they did say any mixed sets will be allowed to stay that way, but effective 1 January you won't be able to register non-NGC coins. So if you already have PCGS coins in your registry sets, they will be allowed to stay, and still count, and you can keep adding PCGS coins up to 1 Jan.

True, but I'm continuing to put together new sets. I've got the better part of a Capped Bust Quarters/Reduced Size ready to go. That's all changed. Plus it looks like I can't add to/upgrade my existing sets if the new coins aren't NGC. Forget it.

Seriously, if you were NGC under the circumstances, what would you do?

It's definitely frustrating. One nice thing about NGC was that if I came across a better coin for a Registry set and it was in a PCGS holder I could still use it, and not have to pass on it just because the label says PCGS and not NGC. I had been looking at moving my sets to NGC for this reason -- I find myself skipping choice coins in NGC holders because PCGS won't count them towards my PCGS registry sets, forcing me to sometimes pay a bit more of a slab premium. Now, that's definitely out, and my money (and sets) will stay with PCGS, whose inventory management system is far superior to NGC's terrible Collection Mangler. The "registry set" thing is starting to get stale, anyway, knowing that unless it's some obscure set, you will most likely never get a Top 3 or 1st place unless you are willing to compete with 'Wondercoins' and other millionaires/super wealthy collectors. Even the "Everyman" sets have driven the prices of AU58 type coins through the roof. It's just not quite as satisfying having, say, the 12th best set of something, and it gets to a point where going up in rank becomes mind-blowingly expensive. (I'm not going to spend $20,000 more on my Washington set to gain a single grade step from 65 to 66 just to get maybe 9th or 8th place rank.) If NGC is trying to position themselves as being first among equals when it comes to TPG's, they have a long way to go. Quality of grading at both NGC and PCGS has gone from bad to atrocious over the last 10 years and shows zero signs of improvement -- when 20 veteran collectors can look at a coin and agree on a "textbook" old school grade of XF45 and the same coin comes back in 20 PCGS or NGC holders with grades ranging from VF30 to AU58, there's a problem.

I liked Registry Sets because once I've loaded them in NGC it's simple to to do a "dog and pony show". One link and a whole set can be viewed, images and all.
And the ranking is an indicator of how much time, effort and, yes, money I've put into my collection. I'm not the type to collect and then hide my acquisitions. I like to enjoy my collection. Part of that enjoyment is sharing a view of it with others.
I'll hold a bit longer to make SURE what NGC says is set in stone. With 10-12 sets already loaded I don't want to delete them only to find out later NGC changed its mind.
