I recently found out my brother-in-law of 20 plus years collected Lincoln cents. I never even knew! I asked him numerous questions about this and that-HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A REDBOOK--HE JUST COMES ACROSS THEM AND PUTS THEM IN THE ALBUM. Then I asked where he got his 1909 S VDB. He said, "Oh that old one. I found it in some change a few weeks ago from the grocery store" ! SOME PEOPLE HAVE ALL THE LUCK!
Moral of this story----tell family members you collect!

Just a word of caution. Many people like to rub it in so to speak. He may have purchased the entire thing and just doesn't want to tell you that. As for not even having a Red Book, no big thing, lots of people don't otherwise their publication would have been 300,000,000 for one each for each person in the USA. Also, I hope you actually saw those coins and not just believed him. Some people even exagerate and some even tell lies, hard to believe. If I were you I would first examine them, then just say not bad, could be better and just walk away. If he is so just so about them, you could say hey why not give them to me and start over.

I feel like something is not quite right, but I am a firm believer that people are innocent until proven guilty. We are missing the details of your interview with him! I do not know how long he has collected, what album he has (maybe he just had a date set), or if you have seen it or not (if not, I hope you get a chance to look at the set yourself).

I do feel uneasy of the possiblity that a 1909-S VDB Lincoln was circulating as recently as a few weeks ago! Another misspent inheritance or theft?

Hmm...well, that would be quite a find. I seem to recall 2 collector censuses back in 1937 finding basically zero 09-S VDB out of 10,000 coins. I suppose anything is possible though
