Please bear with me and don't laugh at my naivte; Last night my hubby emptied his pockets for me as usual to check coins and I noticed one cent stuck out. It's a normal cent 1973 but the edges of it look deep... at least deeper than the others (about 6-7) I saw on the table. I was wondering if there are mint varations that are NOT errors, but just a little difference in how the coins come out. Or it this something to keep? It's hard, I could scan it in, but it's not going to show well most likely. Everything else looks normal except the round edge looks more raised (or the inside design as a whole deeper). I am thinking it's just normal, but are there small variations like this that are collectible at all?

You're seeing things clearly. I think the Cent is a "minor variation" which is within Mint tolerances, and not a collectible as a result. Slightly different press settings or maybe a variation in the planchet composition could account for a "deeper" strike. It's possible that it's a Proof coin which got into circulation. However, that would be an area for comment by one of our Lincoln Cent collectors, which ain't me.

Thanks for responding. I guess on cases where I am not sure, I'll save them and one day, when I've a few, maybe I'll take them to someone to look at. This is the second odd thing I've noticed (plus I have a coated one that seems "lighter") than a normal cent. I just found it a little odd as the edge would wear out faster so would be worn down more wouldn't it? So this must've been pretty deep to begin with if it still is now.

I guess I am not knowledgable, but probably most people might tell me to save anything I find odd to check out later... so that's what I'll probably do.

Oh my hubby got a 1940 Jefferson nickel yesterday too which I thought was pretty cool as you don't find many below the 50's in circulation; I didn't need it, but saved it.

G'day, saving coins from circulation is the least expensive form of coillecting.
Your hubby's nickel will cost you (or perhaps, him) five cents.
Any varieties that you find, put to one side, I suggest.
Keep reading; keep looking at coins; then re-assess your box of "possibilities". You will find that as you learn more about your subject, it becomes easier to recognize the "keepers" - but to get to that point, you have to read, listen, and pay attention. None of this has to be expensive. Which makes this hobby accessible.
On the other hand, you can become a roll-hunter, which may, or may not, mean you've gone "over the edge".

Thanks Peter; I just got notice this had been moved to another section; I apologize for putting it in the wrong area and for not responding to Peter earlier. I missed it.
