This coin was posted on another coin forum and I thought I'd re-post it here to get CCF's opinion on it. Personally I'm concerned about its authenticity. I searched the no-no site of fakes and didn't come up with any matches and generally I haven't seen too many fake Half Dimes come up over the years I've been collecting. Red flags for me: 1. General appearance - textbook patina of modern Chinese counterfeits 2. Date - Looks wrong compared to other examples on the bay 3. Rims/Denticles - Wrong 4. Lack of Detail - Especially on reverse in the wing/feathers, looks very different from that of genuine busties. What do you think? Edited by Joe2007 11/13/2016 11:47 pm

Fake. Coin is just inconsistent period. I'm no expert on Half Dimes, but I know with 99.99% accuracy that it's a fake.

I am not an expert on early Half Dimes / dimes either but this one looks "off"

4. Lack of Detail - Especially on reverse in the wing/feathers, looks very different from that of genuine busties. 1. The texture and patina look consistent with a silver coin that was dug out of the ground and then cleaned. 2. Looks consistent with the LM-1 die variety for 1834. 3. Looks comsistent with a later die state for Half Dimes. 4. I don't see any abnormal lack of detail. http://www.everythinghalfdimes.com/...rriages.html

Maybe a contemporary counterfeit?

From those fuzzy images the only thing I could say is it's questionable. It doesn't scream fake to me and is a roughly $150 coin if genuine. I'd verify the weight and diameter if it were mine.

Thanks for the comments!
TypeCoin - Maybe I'm just paranoid. I guess severe environmental damage could also produce this type of "patina".

I'm seeing ED and doubt this is a fake.

Needs some sharper images, but looks genuine from here. Probably environmental damage.

I lean towards concurring with TypeCoin's assessment. I would need different photos or to see the coin in hand (however unlikely) to solidify my decision.

Just last week I bought the exact same type and year and have it in my hand right now. The OP and mine match up pretty good. The OP denticles look week on the reverse and a little of center. A MAD maybe? The right wing feathers look funky but so do mine. The date is a match.
