I just got this coin recently with some other coins in my collection. It looks like a byzantine piece but in crusader period these type of coins were also minted. I was wondering if anyone recognize this one?

I must be missing something simple here, but I can't pinpoint this one. It is very similar to one of the Byzantine Anonymous Folles types.

Could this be a Romanus III follis with the reverse pic upside-down, so that the upper line of IS/XS is reading here as X/S?

That's what I thought at first, but I couldn't get it to match with his stuff. Maybe if the reverse was cleaned a bit more.

Just for comparison, here are a few Romanus III folles, with reverses - including the X/S at the bottom of each - shown upside-down. Vince's coin is is cropped, or at least has a small flan. Perhaps we just see this portion of the reverse and cross?

Bob I think your right, I just wasn't seeing it. The cropped flan and being upside down just didn't register with me.
