Hi.
This is one of my more recent purchases, in Paris right now at PCGS for grading. I have made my mind up for what grade it is by comparing to pretty much every 5c Kiau Chau sold on Heritage.

How would you grade it?

Well, I can tell you right now.
As I did my research regarding its grade, I didn't see much wear, chest eagle and crosses are weak, just as on examples up in the MS65-class. In hand, it's even nicer, with the only mark I could find was on the 5.

PCGS graded it AU58!
The coin is still in Paris, so I politely requested that they take another look at it. No response yet from them though. I sent them a link to a 65-coin, which I Think my coin surpasses in surface quality

We'll see what happens. As a last resort, I'll cross it and to NGC.

I have found PCGS to sometimes mistake strike weakness for light wear...

In my opinion, AU58 is way too low for this coin. I cannot remember having seen such a nice piece of that type. However, as jdmern states PCGS may have mistaken something for wear that isn't actually wear. Still, I am wondering how one could do here on this coin because the high relief details are sharp and do not show any signs of circulation.

I guess this is an issue that occurs when you send in less common types that graders are not too familiar with. Still, a beautiful coin!

Coin is still in Paris, but they have the picture up.
I guess they could claim the spots on the one side as sign of circulation. I guess it has to be some specific lighting conditions for them to stand out like that.

Anyways, since I feel they are dead wrong, this one is getting cracked and getting an acetone swim before deciding what to do with it.

Btw, I did purchase the full Kiau chau set (a total of two coins). The 10 cent where much more fairly graded...

The 10 cent is exceptional. You do not often see coins of that type dripping in luster like that 10 Cent!

Beautiful. May I ask where you got these beauties? Even though I got the Kiautschou part of my collection already filled, all of the sudden I feel the need to upgrade in terms of grade :)

I got them at a prominent online auction house in Stockholm. they usually have junk or bullion, but sometimes you get lucky. If you do your research...

actually, these were purchased to get graded and sold, so if you want a top pop 10c, let me know.

Got a response from PCGS regarding the 5c coin...

"Dear Sir,

The coin is circulated, many frictions are visible in the field.

Regards,"

Not sure where the see the frictions, as I would call the strike weak.
Oh well, NGC it is then.

To the OP-

I feel your pain. I had an 1909 10c almost exactly like yours in appearance and PCGS also gave me an AU58.

Your coin IMHO is at the minimum a MS62 maybe even a grade above.

I bet your coin looks beautiful "in hand" as well, based upon the pic.
