I just picked up this coin on ebay from a seller that seems to have many "rainbow-toned" coins. This leads me to believe that this one was done artificially. In any event, I got a real good price, so I'm happy. Would appreciate opinions.

It was probably removed from the plastic packaging, and stored touching the blue felt in the case.

Nothing screams artificial to me and it is quite attractive.

Quote: Nothing screams artificial to me I would tend to agree, but I became suspicious when I saw how many similarly toned coins he had listed. Thanks to everyone for feedback.

Natural toning. You can't achieve that degree of color progression from either heat or chemical manipulation, or both.

Quote: male mermaid That's a merman, or the male version of a mermaid. Now, as this is a merman, it can't be Neptune / Poseidon, as he was a 'regular' male, though god of the sea. However, a love child of Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite was Triton and he was a merman. However... Triton is known for the shells on his shoulders, where his father is known to have wielded the trident. In other words: something got messed up with this coin's design. Now when it comes to toning: looking good, not artificial.

He appears to have two full legs, maybe they are just some stylish flippers. Another strange thing is that Krause says "Neptune at left looking right, whale under right hand." It looks more like a dolphinfish (mahi-mahi)
