So I am fairly new to collecting and very, very new to coin roll hunting. My question is in regards to hunting half-dollar rolls... is it still viable today to hunt half dollar rolls in an effort to find older, 90% silver half-dollars?
I would think that most of these were probably already gathered up from collectors by now, no? Since the only people that I could fathom asking for rolls of halves are roll hunting collectors. lol And it seems most of the banks do not even carry them anyway. Makes me question why they are even still made. Which leads to my other two questions I was wondering about:
1.) If you can get a teller to order a box of half rolls for you, where do these orders come from? Would they not likely come with all brand new halves straight from the Fed? Or are the rolls really very varied with many years?; and
2.) I was able to grab 5 rolls from a local bank (have not searched them yet). However, they were brought in and deposited by a customer. My assumption is I got $50 in halves that someone else already searched. lol How else would anyone have $50 in half dollars lying around to deposit?
If anyone has any thoughts or insight I'd appreciate the thoughts. As I am trying to find a bank that even has $500 boxes available, I am wondering if it is even worth it?
Thanks!
-Doug

As Garoyn mentioned- there is a thread dedicated to this topic. To answer your questions. 1)Half dollars are no longer produced for circulation. so no. 2)Often- yes. All searchers are looking for those exceptions to the rule. Especially around Holiday time.

A bank may have five rolls but they may not have all come from the same customer.

most likely the teller gets a few from time to time, then sells them to the head teller, the Head teller gets these from 5 to 10 tellers, and then makes rolls, cycle repeats.
I (being from Canada) have purchased a few boxes of halfs from my bank in the USA, and have never gotten any silver from them. On the other hand, I have picked up rolls from them ( customer wrapped rolls) and have found about 10 x 40% ers over the past year.
The thing about rolls hunting and looking for silver only, it is a volume game period. if you are not doing $1000's of dollars a week you will not likely find anything.

Many banks will order boxes ($500) of halves. The chances of these or even any other coin orders coming directly from the Fed are very slim, as they are handled by local couriers such as Brinks.
The overall chances of finding 90% halves today are VERY slim. I roll hunted thousands of dollars worth between 2009 and 2014, and found few. I also roll hunted in the late 1970's, and found even fewer 90% halves than I found during the later period.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

Which banks are more willing to help a non customer in coin roll hunting? Do banks help non customers who want to purchase coin rolls? Does a non customer have to open an account to obtain the coin rolls from that bank?

Angela, if you don't have an account the bank has every right to say no. that being said, if you are nice and only want a few then maybe they will oblige you. The worst thing for them to say is no, so no harm in asking. On the other hand if you go in and ask if they have anything odd or older coins because you are a collector, they may want to get rid of stuff because it is a nuisance for them (more paperwork)

Angela, the best thing to do is call around and ask. When I first started CRHing halves, I made a list of banks close to me and spent maybe half an hour calling them. Some only had a few, but if it's convenient, go grab them because you'll occasionally find a silver in there. One bank that I don't have an account with was willing to order me two boxes. Some credit unions would only order if you're a member. I've had my bank order me a number of boxes before I got tired of constantly being skunked and switched denominations.
