Usually when I go to the bank in my small town I get paper wrapped rolls - today I had enough "scoots" in my pocket to get 21 nickle rolls and they were all plastic wrapped.
Question is - has anyone found that plastic wrapped nickle rolls surrender the same amount of 1959 and earlier coins as Paper wrapped rolls?
I'm wondering, if the technology of today, do the coin wrapping companies send all coins through a machine to "kick out" the old ones so they roll only newer coinage with just a few "collectibles" being put through to maintain the CRH interest? And if so, what do you suppose they do with the older date coins?

I haven't done nickels, but I've done some Brinks plastic rolls of cents. The only way to kick out coins would be by weight or composition (if magnetic). I'm seeing coppers and wheats in my cents. I don't think nickels have changed in composition since the War Nickels, but if not, then I don't see a way they could sort out the older coins by date.
Rest in Peace

I don't know about Nickels but I found with Lincolns that a lot of plastic wrapped rolls were OBW's ( all one unc. date ).But you should be able to tell that from the color of the edges of the roll . If they are all different color edges then their most likely have the same ratio as paper wrapped rolls for the dates you mentioned .

Holy Moly DRUU - your response had me search the subject. Could this be what is happening to the big time coin rolling companies or do they make enough money doing the rolling and distributing the rolls?

Should? Yes - but 60's have same edge roll patina as 59 and pre! Many times I see a great edge roll patina and it turns out to be 64 - 60 -

Interesting read, Mark. That's far more involved and proprietary that I had in mind. I just know there are companies in Portland and Arizona that run machines to pull out copper cents, then resell them as investments.

In my experience in Canada, machine wrapped rolls only have the newer coins, which are nickel plated steel. I always wondered if machines sort out the nickel and cupronickel coins so they get sent back to be melted. They do weigh a little more than the newer plated coins, so I think it is possible. The last time I found a "normal" amount of nickel/cupronickel coins in a MWR was three years ago. But based on the U.S. roll hunting threads, machines don't seem to sort out older coins.

The clear rolls have been around for many years... way back in the mid-1980s when I was working at a fast food place, I always loved seeing them. One time we did get a batch that had a silver dime or two in every roll... never got a quarter batch like that.

I run across them from time to time today, but so far I've not found anything of note in the 10 or so of these I've run into in the past year.

By the way, War Nickels weigh the exact same amount as other nickels, so there really is no way for the machines to kick them out unless they have a metal detecting device in them. I don't know of such a machine.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Really? I'll be darned, I've never seen any till last year. Actually was surprised when I picked up some cent rolls from the bank and half of them were plastic wrapped.
