question I have a chance to buy a stepper motor. it steps 50 steps per resolution. it runs on 12 volts 200 MA with a 59ohms resistance per winding. the motor has a reverse polarity. one of the problems. it weight 21 pounds. so this it a bite of a beast in size. would this work for focus stacking.

rocky...are you talking about the "pancake" steppers that Surplus Shed has for sale? I actually have some of those, and so far have not been successful in getting them to work well for stacking. They have a threaded shaft, so are not really set up for normal coupling to a rail. My plan was to use the screw shaft directly, but that limits travel to just a couple cm. It is fine for coins though...you don't need that much travel. Note that the 21 lbs is for 80 motors, so they are not that heavy individually...Ray

thanks so much ray. last night I thought theirs noway. they can weight that much. ray I wish there was somebody handy. to where I live that uses one of these focus rails. I know nothing about them. but would very much like to learn how to use one of these setup. I have been thinking. I may try to find a way to contact. the engineering department at the university. I know they have a robotic program. I might be able to get some help there. to understand how to use these stepper motors with the computer programs.

i have a couple of questions. I hope the members here can answer. first the smallest step for the motor. would 0,005 mm is this small enough step. secondly what is an except able amount of backlash or is 0 backlash the goal. third the backlash with focus stacking is this caused by the solenoid. what was asked of myself is the solenoid causing the backlash. do any of you here. that has done focus stacking tried using camranger.
