Newb at collecting and grading. Would appreciate your thoughts on grade and value if you think the coin is impaired. Paid $40. Thanks! I would grade it VF35 and with perhaps an older cleaning that has started to retone, as the color does not look natural from these pictures. Still a pretty nice old girl.

Thanks. It was represented to me as XF40. Can you help me learn what keeps it from XF?

Even with the mushy later die state, there is nowhere near enough detail in the reverse leaves to merit a full XF grade, as the vein detail is only visible on one or two leaves.  to CCF, by the way. Enjoy your stay with us!

I think it just might make xf40, you're not far off. I look at the hair details, and particularly above the ear. A bit of a later die state.

vf35 to xf 40 a tweener. color looks a bit odd but could be photography issue. $40 is an ok price I think. Sometimes you can find them in this shape for a bit less.

I agree with 40 but it's tough to tell if this has been dipped, or not. The photo color leads me to think so, but true color may be different.

under natural light, the coin is a darker brown. this is under a direct incandescent lamp for photos.

Then if the coin appears a dark brown in person, I don't think it is cleaned. XF-40 Straight. And I spy with my little eye a RPD on the 2
