Hi all,

I've been offered the chance to buy a 'coin' online by a contact and it's out of my normal zone. Unfortunately, they know nothing about it (and initially through it might be a hammered!).

It's a silver looking coin, looking to be a commemorative issue from Perugia with hammered style medieval lettering.

The only information I've been able to find online is at the following link:

http://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...ia-465022066

The only difference in that coin vs the one I've been offered is that the offered coin has no hallmarking. I'd love to know a little more about it - I'm more than happy to do some more legwork, if anyone knows of an Italian site I could trawl through with google translate!

Thanks,
LEwis

It is not legal tender and never was, therefore it is either a bullion round or medal; however you want to look at it.

I would pay melt unless you have an extreme interest in the city.

From the description:

I agree with Finn that it has virtually zero value above the intrinsic silver value. Also, keep in mind that it is 92.5% silver not pure silver.

I agree with the assessment above and would add that an item of this nature must be properly marked "COPY" to be imported into the US or to be sold in the US.

I would also like to voice my objection to the use of the word "commemorative" in connection with an item like this. The term has been hijacked (I first noticed Chinese sellers calling their frauds "commemoratives" over a decade ago) and unfortunately it is catching on.

This is not a commemorative. It may be a fantasy or a replica or even a counterfeit but under US law it is an Imitation of a numismatic item and is subject to being permanently marked "COPY" to comply with the HCA as amended.

To be a Commemorative there must be an authority (governmental or quasi-governmental that has the legal right to manufacture and issue such a thing.
