Quote: I am attempting to salvage an old acquired collection that had be improperly stored for a long time. Can you share with us how they were stored?

I mentioned that a little in an earlier post, but I'll try to expound. They came from my wife's late grandfather and after he passed can into the possession of her parents in the late 90a and were basically forgotten about (minus probably some cherry-picking of anything they thought valuable) until I found them in old boxes in the attic, I believe. I'm pretty sure they have been in paid storage unit, not climate controlled, tool shed, attic and garage. None were sealed, just in cardboard flips, grouped in paper baggies or completely loose together in cardboard flip boxes inside other cardboard boxes crammed with other old possessions. So, being in North Texas, they were exposed to very high heat (over 105°F outside temp. on occasion), freezing winters and wildly fluctuating humidity over the couple of decades. Also, as was pointed out, stored in areas that contained numerous other off-gassing chemicals and dust galore, instects and mice. So...just imagine the worse possible neglected conditions other than a sulfuric acid bath or a volcano.

Hopefully it all works out well for you. I'd be afraid of whatever that stuff is on the coins or wrappers. Make sure you wear gloves.

Quote: In the meantime, I have these pieces of his personal history. He worked as an engineer for General Dynamics for many years. These will not be getting the water and acetone treatment. Those are very nice! Definitely keepers.

Okay, these are what will be the first batch: 1918 Taisho Japan 5 rin 1957 Honduras 1c 1942 Reichspfennig 1950 Mexico 50c These are before pics and they have spent the last 24 hours in the acetone bath and were just transferred to a second bath in clean acetone, so I'll keep checking the progress and post final pics when I think the acetone has done all it can do.

Here are the after pics for the first batch. The Mexico 50c and Honduras 1c showed major improvement, the 5 rin some improvement and the Reichspfennig no visible improvement. After removing them, there was still green residue so I decided, considering the condition, to try something I read about involving dipping a Q-tip in acetone and rolling the head over the coin, not rubbing, and it worked very well on the two most improved and helped a little on the 5 rin.

Wow, three out of four is not bad. The Reichspfennig may have too much corrosion to benefit from any more effort. You might have to consider that one a loss.

Most of the Reichspfennige look like that, improperly stored or not. They corroded exceptionally fast.
