Hello! I started collecting old US and ALL foreign currency when I was about 7.... my mom had a bunch of random pen pals from overseas that would visit. I though the money looked like pirate booty. I just kept it in a box for US and a box for foreign (again, like a treasure chest) I did have sense to keep the paper currency laid out flat and separate... Between living in Boston, metal detecting with daddy and just people donating to the cause, etc. I kept up with it. I'm 31 now and I have acquired a pretty healthy collection. I have a whole bunch of paper and coins from all over the world. Unfortunately, about 10 years ago, a BIG chunk of my old US coins and bills were stolen *sound of heart breaking* (I had some cool stuff and an obscene amount of silver) I'm slowly but surely making a comeback. I never did virtually any research on my collection though. I know how to identify silver coins by sight and sound without checking the date, don't crease paper, oil from your hands can cause damage and that it's beyond a bad idea to make any attempts to clean coins.
Sorry for my less than concise post but I still keep my coins in friggin box- those little paper coin holders with the clear frame look like a nuisance.... probably the only way I'll ever sort out the foreign money though cause I've got the whole world all together.
Tips? Thoughts? Suggestions? Whatever you can throw at me. I could use some first steps and guidance.
Thanks a million, me hearties!

and so sorry you were a victim and lost your coins!

I too share your attraction of the treasure chest.
I have three.
GR58 has some pictures of his silver chest.
Some silver coins are only going to be worth melt value and having them in a chest wouldn't hurt a thing.
You could always pull coins with numismatic value aside still have coins in a chest.
