It would be quite helpful if you could mention a couple of features you see which lead you to a grade, too. I am struggling with learning the finer points of differentiating MS grades.

Very tough to grade from scans. This one most likely MS-64RD at best.

Thank you. I am having difficulty learning to differentiate the MS levels.

Would you be willing to give me a couple of points you see which lead you to that grade?

By the way, these are photos, not scans - if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your help everyone! As I am trying to understand how to interpret the kind of strike (above average, average, below average) is on this coin I took some close up photos.

I just don't know how to determine what an average strike looks like for the given date and mint! In other words - how do I find the standard for comparison?

Pete, when I look at MS coins like this, I start with a perfect coin in mind which would equate to an MS70 grade. I then take off for a defects and if there is signs of a weak strike. on the obverse of your coin there is spot on the back of the head. a couple minor marks in the cheek area and rub on the shoulder, lapel and along the bottom of the bust. there are also some small scratches on the rim right below the bust I'm taking off 4 points for all of these, taking the coin down to 66. on the reverse some spots to the left of the memorial and a small nick at 12 oclock. I'm taking off 2 points for these resulting in a grade of MS64. I then look over the coin as a whole for strike and weakness. this coin exhibits a solid even strike on both sides and would not result in any grade loss. the color is full RD. this is just my technique. btw nice pics
