Hi, I have a different penny (1988 D or S) your call, showing half of each the s on top and the d on top. I don't know this could be. But if someone can give me an explanation as how this could happen that would be great. Maybe it's a nothing kind of error but I think its kinda neat. I did go to Ken Potter's and found nothing for that year having to do with that year on mintmarks. There also appears to me, to be a letter D and number 9 above the word GOD Here are some pictures.

I would say this is zinc rot and the coin is damaged. There is no D/S for 1988 that I know of sorry.

Pennies in the 80's were a real mess. So many are messed up that even if you found a real mint error of a 80's Cent, not much interest for most collectors of errors. Can't tell if yours is an error or just a messed up coin.

It looks to me that the D mm took a hit.The hit broke the copper plating loose and pushing it down to fold into a shape that looks like an S.
