I have read several times that during the decision to change the design of US coinage, that Charles Barber had made several designs of a "Washington Nickel" Do we have any pictures of this, or is it just a rumor? I would kind of like to see this design!

Took a few minutes for me to find the answer to your question.

1909 saw 7 different pattern designs for the nickel; 6 of them featured George Washington. These seven patterns reside in the Smithsonian Collection.

The patterns featuring Washington are

Judd-1934/Pollock-2017
Judd-1935/Pollock-2018
Judd-1936/Pollock-2019
Judd-1937/Pollock-2020
Judd-1938/Pollock-2021
Judd-1939/Pollock-2022

Images of these can be seen on US Patterns http://uspatterns.stores.yahoo.net/1909.html

JBNickels! I had no idea Barber was designing some patterns for a Washington nickel, but I especially love the last design! Thanks Meadowview for the info, I always learn something new each time I visit!

Strange how the obverse for the first nickel (with the shield) is essentially the reverse on today's Shield cent.
