I recently received this as part of some stuff that my local Wells Fargo bank saved for me. Is this a national banknote or a federal reserve note? How much is it worth?

Your note is what is known as a Series 1929 Federal Reserve Bank Note. This type of currency was printed for the 12 Federal Reserve banks and the note was an obligation of that particular bank rather than the whole system.

Since these were issued in the Depression years, the BEP used Series 1929 national bank note paper stock that they had on hand to get them printed and issued as quickly as possible.

Contrast this with Federal Reserve notes which are backed collectively by the Federal Reserve system.

ebay sold listings show a couple of $100's on the New York branch have sold around $130.

Sorry, in this condition with the edge tears, it probably has no premium. But still, a remarkable find after more than a century in circulation.

Very cool find @coin197, and I will agree with the Frogmeister that it probably has little value over face because of it's condition.

My thoughts on it's circulation is that is was issued, circulated for a while, pulled from circulation for a great while, and then reintroduced into circulation. I like the look of this series of notes with the four signatures.

Just remarkable in today's world that any bank would re-circulate this old dinosaur. Gives one hope!

Actually, I ask the bank to save odd things that they get for me. Being a YN has its perks!

Even in as poor condition as it is, it still has a premium to it since they aren't exactly all that easy to find for a small size note. Looking at ebay sale prices, I would suspect its worth somewhere around $120 on a good day.

On a very good day indeed, less ebay and Paypal fees.
