I experimented with ordering a large amount of halves to see if there was a greater possibility of getting silver than by getting smaller orders. I ordered $9500 (to stay under the $10000 mark) 2 weeks ago. The order was so large the armored car company (Brinks) didn't have enough to fill the order so they had to special order more. I got them last week and went through all of them so I could deposit them today. My results are as follows: 12/9 $2000 Halves 1 1964 1 1968 D 1 1974 D DDO1 Panama Half dollar 1 1974 S Proof 2 1979 S Proof $2000 halves 1 1964 3 40% 1 1971 S Proof 1 1977 S Proof 1 1983 S Proof 1 1984 S Proof 1 1989 S Proof 12/10 $2000 Halves 1 1967 1 1973 DDO1 1982 P No FG 1 1999 S Proof 1 2000 S Proof $3500 Halves 3 40% 1 1974 S Proof 1 1981 S Proof 1 1991 S Proof 1 1998 S Proof 2 2001 S Proof 1 2003 S Proof 1 2011 S Proof US Army Service Commemorative 1 1971 D DDO1 1973 D DDOTotal $9500 2 1964 8 40% 7 DDO18 Proofs 1 1982 P No FG 102 Unc/NIFC I am a little/lot bummed that there wasn't more in there, but I'm not giving up!! I ordered another $5000 to see what the next batch has. It can't be worse. Just wanted to share some results. Also, for those who keep track of all the details, the wrappers were all the brown wrappers, no black wrappers. I've noticed, at least around here, the black wrappers tend to have more silver in them.

Nice finds. A lot of proofs in there. I am sure the commemorative was appreciated.

The Proofs are all circulated, the comm was hard to even tell it was a proof. Also they are all clad proofs. It still amazes me that there are any proofs in the rolls.

People either inherit or steal them and have no idea they are worth more than face, so they are dumped into circulation.

That seems like a pretty low yield for that many halves. STILL! Better something than nothing! I have had plenty of nothing lol

Question... how will you dump all the halves you won't be keeping?

Wow. That is a lot of halves. I also wonder how you return them!

I'd drive a distance to dump those halves so they don't end up as your next order.

I have a bank I have a very good reputation with. I bag them (they provide the bags) and take them in the day before the armored service comes in. I dropped $9000 off today, I always call and make sure they are ok with it before I go. I also make sure to send the coins to a different coin supplier so I don't get them back from Brinks. I'm hoping the next $5000 does better.

How long does it take you to sort $2000?"

Sorry to hear you didn't find much, but I'm glad you found a decent variety and you weren't skunked.
My most disappointing large order was $6,000; no silver, a couple circulated proofs, and several rolls of AU NIFC was all I had to show for it. I also deposited the searched coins in bags.
I ordered $6K another time in a different state and Brinks couldn't completely fill it because they had only $4K on-hand. They didn't offer to come up with the other $2K via special order as they did for you. In the $4K Brinks delivered I found 8 silvers; 7, 40's and 1, 90...Not great, but I'll take it.
I'm currently planning another large order around the end of the month. I'll report here if I can manage it.
HH everyone

Quote: (to stay under the $10000 mark) Be Careful, you just admitted to breaking federal law. Structuring, also known as smurfing in banking industry jargon, is the practice of executing financial transactions (such as the making of bank deposits) in a specific pattern calculated to avoid the creation of certain records and reports required by law, such as the United States' Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Internal Revenue Code section 6050I (relating to the requirement to file Form 8300).[

Steele I always wondered are you an accountant or work in finance? I have given up on half dollars for a while as all the armored cars in my area all report to Dunbar/loomis etc since they're all connected. I am having decent success with dimes normally 1-2 per box

Tellers can also file a SAR if you make structured withdrawals of your own cash in amounts over $5k.
