I'm thinking of going coin roll hunting within the next few days. What are my chances of finding something valuable? I'd prefer a fraction/ percent, but any pointer is fine

Based on my findings, about 1 in 35... I find about 1.3 per box. If you get 25 rolls, you have a reasonable chance of finding one. Customer wrapped rolls tend to produce the best finds with dimes in my experience.

It's random IMO. Sometimes I go through many rolls of dimes and find nothing, and sometimes I get less than five rolls and find 1-4

It's about the same odds of finding a 1903 IHC in searching 2 rolls of cents . Ahh ,I wonder who that was ?

Hmmmm let me guess! Tony! Silvery Silver, it is so random, there is no formulated odds. They say on average you should get 10-12 wheats per box and we all know that isn't very true. Members here have gotten half the box as wheats.

If you are seriously asking the question; "If I were to go to the bank and buy 1 roll of dimes, what is the odds it would contain at least 1 silver dime in it?"
then you have the WRONG hobby, don't even start. PERIOD.
you are asking this question to people who boxes and boxes of coins per week. For example just last night I went through:
$690 Quarters $300 Dimes $138 nickels
And found no silver, however my yearly average to date is roughly 1 silver dime for every $50 or so dollars, and for quarters its about 1 for $500.
I am up in Canada but the rules still are the same, this is a volume play, if you are not committed to this then you are just playing.

Silver dime finds are pretty much the exception, not the rule.

I went through about $100K in dimes between 2009 and 2014. About one silver dime found per 30 rolls.

to CCF. While I don't search rolls, I do use the self-checkout register at my local Price Chopper and on occasion pay the decimal amount with 1950's B/U Lincoln Cents & Proof Cents to Quarters from 1960 to early 1970's.. I always imagine a younger person receiving them and getting excited, and if only one person takes up coin collecting, it will have been worth it.. When I started collecting, Morgan & Peace Silver Dollars were still in circulation and I remember getting excited receiving my first 1965 Clad Quarter as everything was still silver..

Quote: I'm thinking of going coin roll hunting within the next few days. Earlier in the year I was averaging 1 silver per 8 rolls of customer wrapped dimes. At this point it's about 1 in 12. I've never found more than 1 silver in a case of dimes. Received one Mercury in change at a grocery store last year. Never found a silver dime in a coin machine return tray. At this time of year I'd avoid buying cases of dimes and ask the bank to " save" customer rolled coins for you. In the area I live in, that seems to yield a better collectable selection of any coin denomination than buying cases and at this time of the year you probably will have more success in finding something of value. YMMV.

Quote: Never found a silver dime in a coin machine return tray. Starting with the end of the story, two days ago as I was leaving a Walmart I saw a guy dumping coins into the coin star. Sounded like he had a load of coins being dumped and every once in a while that distintive sound of a coin dropping into the return tray. He immediately retrieved the rejects making me glad I checked the tray before I started shopping! When I entered the store I had to circumvent customers and shopping carts right in front of the machine as they lined up at the pickup counter next to the machine. Found four dimes. Generally only Canadian dimes and US silver drop down so I was very happy about my chances of finding silver. First dime I looked at was a 1964 Roosevelt - 1st silver coin I ever found in the reject tray! Others were 1965, 2000 and 1999. Hoping to find more as the holiday season moves forward. Now I'll stop by that store everyday. No luck at local banks so far this holiday, hopefully that will change.

The answer is simple... It's either 0% or 100% depending on whether or not you find one in the roll you're searching

You can knit dollies, sell them for a buck each, buy silver with those dollars, and have a lot more silver than the same amount of time spent roll hunting.
