An ex-professor that I know bought this coin 25 years ago from a friend. The card with it says Ptolemy X/Cleopatra III Sear 7938. It is 25 mm wide, 4 mm thick, 14.45 grams. There are some marks on the edge, but no seam, and they are not in a consistent place on the edge. Is it real? What is the value?

Looks like the cast edge seam was "mostly" sandpapered or ground away still leaving a pretty distinct line.

Looks okay to me, though a bit heavier than the ones I've spotted. Svoronos 1729, Alexandria mint.

Looks like year 13 for Cleopatra and year 10 for Ptolemy. I agree SB-7938, I came up with Svoronos 1727, but 1729 may be a closer match.

Ron and/or Bob, for those of us still learning, could you please walk through how you dated this coin? I'm assuming that the letters immediately to the left or right of the eagle are the key indicator? Is it alpha=year 1, beta = year 2, and so on? Thanks!

Sure, Dave. I cheated. The devices perfectly match Svoronos 1729 which, as I see on ACsearch.info, CNG, and elsewhere, are all dated 105/104 BC. Nice when the pro's do the deciphering for you.

More like finding an alternate method for solving the problem. Ok, I was just wondering how these coins are attributed to such a narrow time range.

I see them again and again dated "years 13 and 10 (105/104 BC)".

The iota-gamma in the reverse left field is the Greek equivalent for 13 (iota = 10; gamma = 3); and the lower iota is 10. That much I can see. But I don't know the series well enough to understand the equating this to 105/104 BC.

Parthian coins I can more or less figure out the dates from the Greek numbers by basing them on the Seleucid calendar and then converting them to BCE/CE. But I've never read up on dating Ptolemies.

There has to be a science to figuring out the dates that I'm not aware, but near as I can figure dismissing the year 13 for Cleopatra III and just going by the regnal year for Ptolemy X. Year 10 would be 104/03 BC.
