I'll probably be back in the USA sometime in 2017, and wondered whether half-dollars are easier to get from banks in certain states or cities. Obviously I don't have a US bank account so I wouldn't be able to order any - I'd have to ask the cashier if they had any!
My experience at obtaining halves on previous visits has been very varied:
New York City - none at all Philadelphia, PA - none at all Los Angeles, CA - none at all US Virgin Islands - none at all Boston, Mass - Got a single 1974D after asking in several banks! Key West, Florida - got about three common ones after trying every bank in town! Miami, Florida - similar experience to Key West Richmond, VA - got a single CWR roll from one bank, but it was a good one, with several 40% including a 1969S proof Las Vegas, Nevada - no problem getting halves Denver, Colorado - no problem getting halves Durango, Colorado - no problem getting halves Orlando, Florida - no problem getting halves
This is totally unscientific, as once I get halves in a particular city I don't bother trying other banks. So it may just be that in some cases I just struck lucky!
Also - are you more likely to get half-dollars in old-fashioned downtown bank branches, or in those modern box-like banks in the suburbs (the sort that usually have drive-thru ATMs)?
Thanks for your advice!

I have found that after moving from the Chicago area to the Phoenix area that halves and dollars are seen more often in the Southwest than back in the Midwest. Las Vegas used to be a haven for halves and dollar coins until they switched almost overnight from coin machines to paper. There are still a few coin machines here and there but 99% of the machines accept paper money only and pay out with bar-coded receipts. (Dollar machines and table games switched mostly to Ike sized tokens years before however...) I can almost always find halves at grocery stores and banks. I often see them at places like Walgreens in small quantities as well.

I've been able to get rolls of half dollars at banks here in Tucson in the past. However, no silver.

No problem in Maryland. You can get em if you ask usually!

Lived in Atlanta and currently in Charlotte. Both places were easy to get them at banks (tellers almost always had at least one in their tray, and usually willing to order them) but nearly impossible anywhere else. Aside from what I personally spent, I have seen maybe five people spend them.

I find halves to be fairly easy to get in metro Detroit area, but many banks will not give you any without having a bank account with them.

Many banks I have dealt with do not keep halves around long, they send them back in as they are rarely requested by customers. That is prob why they don't often have them. Befriend your local mini marts cashiers, you can get from them occasionally and more likely to get silver that way!

None of the banks around here in North East FL seem to have halves.....but a local credit union seems to have lots that banks do not have. They also have a very active coin star machine so that might help contribute. Sometimes they empty it out 2 and 3 times on a Saturday.
