hello all

just wondering about something. from what I have been reading about the two "main" grading services... NGC and PCGS.

I do not a whole lot of faith in PCGS, with the constant comments about their (alleged) poor customer service, mis-handlings of coins to include damage, long delays, etc. I am not making any judgements or accusations here, just asking a question.

On the other hand, NGC has its problems too..., but they do seem to have better customer support (I had an issue with a NGC coin once, and when I called NGC, they attempted to get me to jump through hoops, telling me to contact different people etc. I got fed up and told them I was not jumping through hoops for them to fix a problem that THEY created and asked for the matter to be forwarded to a supervisor.

whahla! the very next day I was contacted by an NGC supervisor, the problem was fixed, plus they offered to re-lable the coin as it should have been done in the first place. what it was is that the first-line NGC respondent tried to get me to do their job. But I will give them credit for fixing the problem themselves.

ok, I am going the long way around the barn. I read from this board first that NGC is the most strict in grading, then I read that no, it is PCGS is more strict, etc. I personally believe that NGC is the most restrictive by personal experience... a coin which should have been graded a 69, or a 68 at the very least was actually graded as a 67! ok, I was mad. it was hard for me to as I have seen PCGS coins not even looking nearly as good as my coin, some having obvious defects, being graded as a 68 or a 69!

ok. my issue now has noting to do with any of that!

here is my question... on NGC serial numbers, there are a series of numbers ending with a dash (-) and then something like "001". I had always understood, apparently in error, that this example would mean that this is the first coin graded in say, for instance, as a 69.

obviously I am in error, as I came across two identical coins, in a 69 grade, that both have at the end "-001".

huh? how can two coins, exactly the same in year and model (such as Ultra-Cameo, including the grade, both have the same ending number", altho the serial numbers are different? ok, here are the listings...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/19205268239...RK:MEBIDX:IT

and now the other...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Canada...AOSwqYBWoc~R

you will note that they are both the same year, same grade, both UC, but they both have "001" at the end. these are not the same coins as evidenced by the different serial numbers assigned to both. huh?

anybody who can help me understand something which I must have obviously have mis-understood in the past will be appreciated...

thanks... mike

The numbers after the - eg -013 have nothing to do with the grade or anything else.
All these numbers represent is the sequence that the coins were listed on the submission.
For instance if I sent 14 coins into NGC for grading they would come back with XXXXXXX-001 to XXXXXXX-014.
The first lot of numbers (XXXXXXX) are unique to that particular coin and is also the same as the submission number and the -XXX is the position on the submission form that coin was put on.
NGC doesn't add the grade to the cert# like PCGS does. neither do they put the coin type identifying number on the cert#
The number -001 would be by far the most common number on the end of an NGC cert#.
Rest in Peace

Trout nailed it. Has to do with submission form line number for those three numbers after the dash.
