hi guys
ok, here is the deal. I just bought a 2012 Canada 5 oz gold maple leaf, NGC graded as a 69. it is a proof coin, as far as I can tell proof was the only way they made them. there were no other bids.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Canada...192052682398?
It cost $7,500 total (no sales tax to California for over $1,500 purchases).
It seemed like a fair-to-good deal as there was another one like in in the same grade for around $10k. also, there was this
APMEX listing for the same coin, again in a 69 grade, for $10,600 with pp. as you know,
APMEX does not openly have a "make offer" provision... if you want a coin, it is a fixed, no-auction, no offer price.
http://www.apmex.com/product/115549...er-pf-69-NGCok, the other
ebay guy wanted $10k or offer for his coin.
APMEX wanted $10,600... period. as I said, I bought it for $7,500... some $3,100 less than
APMEX.
ok, so I go over to the vaulted NGC coin price guide, where they say as of right now the melt value for the coin is $5,700 as of 12.20.2016 (today), the NGC "price guide at the bottom of their page is $9,150, so I got it for something like $1,650 less than that.
https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...-duid-440401there were 200 of these made, or at least 200 was the mintage goal.
I think I did ok, but has been your opinion that the NGC price guide is fairly accurate? I personally think that NGC is overly-harsh on their grading for the most part, yet I have seen too many stories and too many coins from other grading service that grade faulty coins that would normally be a ms64 at NGC, but now, it is like a ms67 at some of the lessor-used or known graders, especially the bottom feeder ones or even over at the "esteemed" PCGS.
I would rather have an under-graded coin than an over-graded coin, yet I think that NGC takes it too far and under-grades coins from one to two grades from what it should be. yet I am too afraid to re-submit to NGC in case they decide to make an example out of me for daring to question their overly-restrictive (in my opinion) grading and grade it even lower!
the reason I am irritated is that I have a coin which I KNOW is at least a 68 to a 69. even under a magnifying glass I cannot see ANY blemishes, scratches...zero defects and NGC graded it as a 67! yet, I have seen several 67 graded NGC coins with obvious errors than can be seen by the unaided by the unaided eye and so I just do not know which or who to trust any more.
maybe I will submit it to anacs or others in the lower ranks, I am pretty sure I would at least get a 69 out of it.
or maybe I just got the wrong attitude. any thoughts on this would be appreciated. btw, before anybody thinks I am some kind of hi-roller collector, let me say that this purchase wiped out my entire savings and I live in a 25 year old pos rv. I spend my retirements check on coins and eat out of cans bought from the dollar store, rather than improve the quality of my life in other ways, like, ah, living in a real house. ok, I never said I was a genius. I
but I just love collecting these coins, so be it... I just gotta figure how I can live on $70 for ten days... oh well, it is not the first time I have eaten top raman (and I like it).
