Hi there,
I'm a novice when it comes to spotting error coins, however, this one looked unusual. Is there a possibility that it's a mint error? I'd be interested in finding out the rarity of such a coin, and appreciate any expertise which you can provide.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply. I've attached an obverse picture, as well as a pic of the reverse side in natural light.

Thanks again.

Difficult to see on heavily circulated coins.
Could be caused by die fill.

The coin does have the appearance of being 'out of round' at exactly the area where the 'fill' is.

Not really noticeable on the Obv image, but quite obvious on the rev image. Could just be the angle used to get the image though, anyhow I'm inclined to agree with echidna.

The die probably had a build up of grease or oil on it.

Thanks for the information and taking the time to reply. I'm curious to know whether this is fairly uncommon, or something a casual noodler comes across every now and again. Has anyone seen similar die errors before?

It's reasonably common and the more 'fill' there is the more desirable the coin becomes. A lot of times there is just 1 letter or number missing. No great premium on them unless nearly all the legend is gone.

Here's one of mine:$1 1984 EC69 Obv Filled Die 'LIA 1984' missing

Nice find! Thanks again for the info. Come to think of it, I came across a 2014 Remembrance Day $2 coin which also had some die problems on the obverse. Kind of similar to yours, but this one is only missing the '4' (in 2014), as well as some letters in 'ELIZABETH II'.

Last week I spent several enjoyable hours reading many of your forum pages. One subject that got me very excited was Grease Filled Die errors.

I went through all the coins I could lay my hands on and found one. It's a 2014 $2, it's only half an E missing but it's my first one and as several of your contributors say "It's a keeper".
