Were these coins randomly found in rolls with Canadian planchet toonies or were German planchets found bundled in rolls separately?

I have acquired 2 rolls of 1996 toonies and about to bust open.

Simple point is they are not rare, if I remember right the 1996 toonies in a original paper wrapper is rare, so your two rolls might have value there.

They were mixed in the rolls together, but you will not find German planchet twoonies from mint boxes dated later than May 1996.

That is simply not possible. All German planchets were delivered to Winnipeg for circulation strikes.

There were 10 million German planchets purchased prior to minting so used in the initial runs. A bit over 3% of the total production. The German ones command a noticeable premium not just because of the low percentage of production but because it's difficult to identify which are which; particularly once circulated. So while the German planchets are not rare per se; getting your hands on a positively identified one can be difficult and IMHO is only possible with high grade examples. Don't take the seller's word for it if it's ungraded (with the odd exception such as Coin Mart of course).
