Wonder where the seller got their idea for pricing?

Hi edweather,

This is a good article from CoinWeek. It has some background on the discovery.
http://www.coinweek.com/featured-ne...e-mint-sets/

Here's the unopened '43 that sold at Heritage.

The seller may take a lower offer, but I don't think it will sell for much less.

I don't believe they are really "double mint sets". At that time the Treasury Dept would sell any collector upon request up to two of any date and mint coin they had in stock for face value plus postage The coins were just placed in a coin tube and it was folded over. No special packaging, or holders/envelopes etc. From what I have seen of the examples that have turned up they have almost all been from the same person and he merely ordered two of each coin for each year.

I tend to agree since no one has presented an order form or advertisement indicating such. I do find the two coin limit and the double mint set configuration intriguing. Does anyone know when the treasury discontinued selling upon request up to two of any date and mint coin they had in stock?

Anybody know why the early mint sets had two examples of each coin?

They came in a holder that only showed one side of the coin. The sets came packaged so that each issue had one coin obv outward and the other rev out.

I reckon there's an 'expert' on most everything we collect. Here's one claiming the old double mint sets: http://www.osv.expert It's a good read if nothing else. That old bag of coins on ebay piques me interest, but my wallet is speaking a different language.
