I recently purchased this presidential numismatic artifact.

This is NOT a commemorative medal that was issued after the event, but rather a presidential medal that was awarded by/issued by direction of President Eisenhower during the 1960 Paris Summit event in May 1960.

The 1960 Paris Summit collapsed because of a US U-2 spy plane was shot down in Soviet airspace. This medal can be considered a cold war artifact.

I added a picture to show the size in relationship to a US Morgan silver dollar. Both are the same diameter, thickness, and metal content. The only difference is its smooth edge.

This presidential medal has a direct link to President Eisenhower and US History, thus making it a rather unique presidential numismatic artifact.

Is the "DDE-C4-02" the catalogue number? If so, what catalog is used.

Make this a required medal to introduce the Ike dollar series!

Very interesting and I appreciated your time in providing it for us.

Are the combination #'s and Capital letters a catalog number? If so, what catalog is used?

That would be a very interesting medal to include in a Ike dollar collection.

Thank you for taking time to introduce it to us.

Sorry for the late reply (holiday vacation).

I'm in the process of writing a third book relating to these special Government medals (sGm).

Here is a website to get a taste of what is to come.

http://potus-sgm.com/

There are three videos at the bottom of the website.

I have experienced the difficulty of experienced collectors and numismatic publications to comprehend the discovery of an entire US Mint series. This provides a basic understanding:

Lastly, (as seen it this thread) I'm considering changing the identifier (add my surname) to take credit for the discovery, organization, and formation of this series.

A sneak peak of the book cover (draft) and other related information is at my ANA blog. It may take some time to get through all my related blog entries.

I have four different appreciation medals:

1. South America 1960
2. Newport 1960
3. Portugal 1960
4. The small "For a better Understanding" 1959 issue. It has a hole, but I was told it was received that way.

The medals came from my father, he was in the 1254th Air Transport wing which has been defunct since 1966 and was on the trips where these were given. I have other memorabilia from that era including playing cards from the Columbine :

And a Christmas card from the crew which will be headed to the Museum of the Air Force soon (has been accepted by panel):

I will post photos of the medals later if anyone is interested.
I will definitely pick up a copy of the book once released.

Excellent ! These are presidential artifacts!

PM me. If you provide rank and last name I may be able use my research expertise to locate information relating to award of the medal to your father.

Also, recently I written a blog at the American Numismatic Association website discussing the the 1959 issue.
