So the family and I went up to Las Vegas for a couple days this week. The last time we were there in 2015 there were still a couple casinos on Fremont Street that had some quarter, half dollar and dollar (token) machines. These were the Fremont and the "D" casinos. All other machines all over town were all bills and paper tickets.
It seems that the last of the coin machines are gone from both these places. While the trays remain they have all been retrofitted with bill acceptors and ticket generators.
As far as change finds go this was one of the worse trips ever! After 4 days including a 300 mile trip up and back, stops at various stores and restaurants etc. in 3 states I had about $6 or $7 dollars in change when I got home. Out of all this I found 2 (out of 15) copper pennies and one measly Bicentennial quarter that was in decent enough shape to retain for my tube.
I did better at the grocery store when we got home and refilled the kitchen. Since we didn't use much of the cash we brought with we used it at the Safeway instead of the debit card. At the pharmacy I got a 54 nickel and at the regular checkout I got a 44 penny and a well worn 49 nickel. The service desk had $5 in halves and $15 golden dollars, the only keeper was a pretty decent 76 half, the rest went into the chum jar.
I was there last year and I think circus circus still had a few hold out coin in coin out slots. Then again I did ruin my liver on that trip, so I could be wrong.
I lived up there for a year or so; leaving in January 2016. Since then La Bayou (they were all coin slot machines) closed.
The Plaza, near the Gotti car display, had some video poker machines that would pay out in Ikes. I also recall the California having some quarter machines.
It may be a long while before I ever go back. Living up there, I really came to hate it, and I still refer to the place as "Trashcan".
The El Cortez (i love staying there, it's like old world Vegas) still has a silver strike machine but they stopped putting real silver in the SS machines at all casinos a few years ago. Still worth $10 though and it pays out well in my exp
