Thanks, cashflow. I was wondering if perhaps I should have posted this in the general US coins forum and not the errors subcategory... I'll wait and see, and if no one chimes in, I'll try that!

I can't see the number 17. But, I can see the sheep head with the stitched nose just to right of the Y in Liberty.

I have a 196? dime with that same problem. Cant see the 'IN' or the 'WE' or the last number in the year.

 to the forum! The 17 you see is where the coin's surface has been scratched. The missing digits are a result of grease, dirt, or other debris filling those parts of the die. This is known as a filled die error, not a highly sought after error, but an error all the same. I see other odd markings on the surface, but from the images provided, I can't tell what it is, maybe glue or something else stuck to it?
