Hi all. New to the forum, from France.

I was in London for a few days. I went to Gold Coin Exchange at Charing Cross Rd and I have to confess that I had the most awful experience ever. I went to check and possibly purchase few coins but I will definitely be avoiding the place like the plague. Staff were very rude, the shop was dirty and the place looked dodgy to say the least.

I was just wondering whether anyone have had a similar bad experience to share?

Thanks!

I visited the shop a while back and I have to say - I agree with your points, although possibly not as much. I didn't buy anything there. I was looking for junk silver, sterling. The shopkeeper did indeed have some, but wasn't selling them piece-by-piece and wanted me to buy them by mail older, somthing I definitely wouldn't want to do when I'm in the very shop looking at the very items. I tried to talk myself into buying something there and then but the shopkeeper wouldn't budge. I agree that the shop was dirty and coins were just placed everywhere without much care. The junk silver wasn't very expensive at 10% over spot which I find very resonable for such a shop and I'll admit, I didn't look at other price tags in the shop. The shop smelled like tobacco smoke, something I both absolutely hate and am disgusted by.

If you are still in London for now and if you haven't already, check out the shops at Cecil Court (which crosses Charing Cross Road up the street from Trafalgar Square, very close to Gold Coin Exchange). There are two coins shops on that street, one of which is lower-end "junk" coins with coins at display outside the shop, the second one is located under a stamp shop. The staff of both seemed quite accomodating and appreciative of your business.

Thanks X2an, I will be back in London in a few weeks time. I will go and check them out. I'm sure that any other place will be better than Gold Coin Exchange! The proprietor surely gives coin dealers in London a bad name!

Jbuck: thank you for your help!
