Hi there. I've been away from this site for a while, and just started trying to catch up on old posts and getting re-engaged. I saw some really lively discussion on a relatively new topic that was very inspiring in fact, and I was looking forward to joining the discussion. I was dismayed when I got to page 3 and saw no spot for reply, then realizing the entire topic was locked.

"Previewing the Coin Market in 2017: A Long-term Outlook for the Hobby"

It seemed one of the members was coming across a bit strong, and I intended to tell him that (just that), while also encouraging the respectful nature of the discussion. I think oftentimes some members might just need a little prodding to be "reigned in", but in this case the admins locked the entire topic. Just hoping to get a better understanding on why that happened. Thanks so much.

In a nutshell, it's at our discretion.
The toast was done on this one.

It became too contentious and lapsed into personal attacks veering too far off topic.

Of course it is your discretion. My point was why not give someone a warning, rather than ruin it for everyone by just locking the topic? That topic was very relevant and important as it was about the future of coin collecting. Locking the topic sends a message, and I'm not sure what that message is, but it is not positive.

Sometimes we try to clean up the mess and leave the topic open, but if that entails too much work, we just lock it.

When we do not issue a warning it is usually obvious to those who are involved what sin they committed. If they do not get it, then perhaps they may want to rethink their continued participation here.
Rest in Peace

The number of topics we ever see locked are miniscule.

In most instances I think of it with this question: Would I want to be part of this discussion in my living room?

Those very few that get locked or deleted are those I wouldn't want to be a physical part of because no one is learning anything, and I know that's why most of us are here.

Thanks jbuck and moxking. I always appreciate your points of view.
I guess I was just disappointed that this conversation had to end because of one "bad apple".

So where do we go from here? Is it ok to start a new topic that involves a similar subject matter?
