Dear all,

I'm a novice coin amateur and need help for identifying the coin (its state, period and place of mint, type, etc.) in the attached image. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's a very early silver dirham of the Umayyad Caliphate. The obverse marginal inscription is nice and clear, an I translate it to the Wasit mint, Year 95 of the Islamic calendar (= 713/714 AD). Wasit, in what is now central Iraq, is a fairly common mint from this time-period. Year AH 95 was towards the end of the reign of Caliph Walid I, though he is not named on the coin. Besides the date and mintmark, the entire coin is covered with quotes from the Qur'an.

Hi fahte, and welcome to the forum.

As usual I agree Sap, but in addition I would like to mention that what is written on both sides are versus from "Quran".
I can translate it if you are interested.

Dear Sap,

Thank you very much for the explanation. It was definitely helpful. Could you please tell me how you can tell the date of the coin?

Dear eg_collector,

Yes please, I am very much interested. Thanks for your offer.

I googled around for a visual aid to translating an Umayyad coin and couldn't find one, so I had a go at making my own, based on your coin. Here's the obverse:

The script is Kufic, an early version of the Arabic alphabet and quite tricky to read. Fortunately, I've got a guidebook, "Arabic Coins and How to Read Them" by Richard Plant, which tells me where the words are and what each word means.

Here's the reverse:
