Hi all,

Firstly thanks for letting me join your forum.
My question is:-
I have 2 WW1 Commemorative £2 coins which are slightly different.
One has the writing around the circumference the correct way up if you have the Queens head uppermost. The other is the opposite ie the writing is upside down if the Queens head is uppermost.

I believe this is an error by The Royal Mint, is this correct?
Also if it is a Mint error, is there any value in either of these coins?

Many thanks
Andy

Hello James and to the Forum!

This is not a mint error. The incuse edge lettering on modern British £1 and £2 coins is applied to the blanks before they are fed between the dies that strike the obverse and reverse designs.

The blanks are fed into the coin press totally at random, so the edge inscription may be either way up and may start in any position. So there is no additional value if the inscription is one way up or the other.

The more interesting thing about the Royal Navy coin is that there appears to be some with a minting error which make it appear that there is a flag on the mast.
