I've been offered about 150 silver Washington quarters in flips varying from good to extra fine condition for melt value ($3 each, 12x face, nothing rare)...should I buy them? Why or why not? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by berto 01/02/2017 6:12 pm

For melt Heck YES!! Silver is low right now - I'd buy tonight if possible just in case silver goes up in value when the stock market opens tomorrow morning!!
Melt for a 90% quarter is 2.88 as of now

I'd buy them too. That's a fair price

If I had the money I'd pick them up.

The coins in EF-40 or thereabouts, plus any die varieties, would make at least a few of the coins a great bargain, on top of the already very fair price for the lot.

No reason not to buy them with silver relatively low.
If you don't already have one it would be a great time to start a set.

I wouldn't buy because I'm usually willing to sell to dealers at 11x.

The last time silver was hovering around $16 I saw people shopping bags of it at coin shows for 12x and being offered around 10x. I would offer around $400 for the lot and see if they take it.

If I had the extra cash I would pick them up for sure.

I'd buy them, pick out the best for your collection, and resell the ones that are only worth melt.

To silver or not to silver: that is the question.
Except we ALWAYS end up with the same answer.

Same answer: Don't buy them unless you figure silver will go up a ton, otherwise handling costs will kill you.

Yes, handling costs will kill you unless you figure the cost of silver is going to double within a couple of years. If you had some 32-D's and 32-S'es in the batch it might be worth it. If you believe the US and World economy is going to crash and our paper money won't be worth the paper it is written on then buy it as insurance.

I'm with davec. Offer a little less and see if they bite. It's worth a shot.

Let me get this straight. You're offered 150 90% silver quarters for just 10 cents over melt per coin. That's about 27 ounces of silver bullion for only $15 over total spot. And people are saying "don't buy", "make a lesser offer" ? If you don't buy then can you send me the details, I can PayPal the money immediately...

It's a better price than we've seen for some years, but be prepared to own it for five years if investment is your motive.
I bought most of mine when I could get 90%ers for 3.6 x face.
And I've bought eagles when spot was $22.
I don't know what silver will do, but I do know that its price will change.
