An old friend of mine works for a parking management company in a major city. As all the receipts pass through his hands, I've long suggested to him that he should learn to recognize silver coins. Until now, he's shown no interest in coins, whatsoever.

After finding the below, two coins among a day's receipts and replacing them with two one dollar bills, he phoned me. I suggested that he hold a refrigerator magnet to them. It stuck to the 1894-S but not to the 1922.

The counterfeit 1894-S is noticeably lighter, weighing but 19.4 grams. The 1922 weighs a regulation 26.7 grams. Whereas the counterfeit displays the typical XF detail, the 1922 appears to be nearly uncirculated.

It's unknown whether these came from the same person, but I'd guess that's quite likely. I'm now hopeful that my old buddy will want to look for the silver coins that likely pass through his hands!

I'll double his money if he wants to get rid of the bogus Morgan.

I'm planning to pass these around at a local coin club. I'll take a magnet and scale to the meeting, hoping that this "show and tell" demonstration will be educational for some.
Rest in Peace

Excellent idea Exoguy. Being shown an example and demonstrating how the fake is detected is a great help.

Good luck getting your buddy to look for silver. Maybe you could volunteer to help count the daily catch

That's a very good idea. I have a lot of counterfeits in my collection. Some are so good I could easily pass them off and no one would ever be the wiser. On the other hand some are so bad it's amazing they were ever accepted by anyone. I have been slowly getting them all catalogued for my own personal information. I have an xrf scanner and break them down by composition, weight, diameter, and magnetic or not. At the local coin shows all the regular dealers know me and they pull their bogus coins for my collection. I also take the XRF with me and every show I find a few that people are trying to sell are counterfeit. The dealers will tell them it's a counterfeit yet the person is sure it's real and the dealer is trying to "rip them off". When you pull out the scanner and show them their "silver" coin is 90% tin they stop arguing.
