I just noticed this one on a 1955 cent I have in an ICCS holder. It looks to be a clash of the portrait's neck area just over the date:

Hi Kurt,

I just installed a software (ArcSoft) that can do overlays - now if I can just get some spare time... I am working with Dick on the 1979 pennies. Can you post the obverse as well (the best would be both sides all shown).

Marc, that would be a cool analysis! I just guessed at the alignment, but I'll post pics later.

This software is ammmazing. There is a "despeckle" option that does wonders... There is even a "scratch removal" option.

ebay buyers beware.

I hate it that I have to loog in everytime I reply to a post! Five times logged in, but only one re[ply!
So much for this computer!
Kurt, I ran into another clash, in the coins that Bryan sent: !1978, with the same clash remnants in the same area as the '79. Not quite so prominant, but definitely ythere.
Marc, I tried until I was "blue in the face", trying to contact Piere, but no contact. I think he only has email, or other contact once a week. If I remember correctly, it took me over two weeks to finally install the CDROM, and then I couldn't use it! I need the BOOK!. I'll get it, too eventually! whiole I remember, what is the "ARC-SOFT software for overlays?

Dick,
That's interesting! I should familiarize myself with which areas of Canadian cents clash.

I bet you could trade your Charest CD for a few good coins.

Ok Dick, I contacted Pierre regarding your question. Standby.

The software can be found here http://www.arcsoft.com/products/photostudio/

(trial version available)

Jurt, I would rather trade it for the book!
Marc, the center of the coin is where the clashes will appear, due to the shape of the dies. they are slightly cone-shaped, and as a result of a contact, onlt the colsest points will leave a mark on the opposite die face. thus, the location, always being very close to the center of the coin. BUT, there are cases where the dies clashed several times, and the area inclusive, them is larger. Witness the 'prision cents", where the bays are seen in front, and in back. In some cases, part of the date, and liberty letters will show... The wheat cents were even more impressive, due to tha area covered. I'll try to locate a "clash photo, (again by Coop), and you will see how far-reaching the clash marks can get.

Dick, Pierre confirmed he is sending the BOOK, not the CD (discontinued).

Marc, I can't seem to get thru to him. Can you ask him if I might swap my ORIGINAL CDROM for the book? I'll pay S&H. I just want the book.

It's nice to see peoples at work looking to find mint mistake on coins, whe would think that the name mint would mean that any coins comming out the press would be A-1,but like any other things made by machine nothing is perfect I guess this is why I started to look more closely to coins first with a loupe and then with a microsope knowing the coins after looking at them many time to find any defect I think this is what make numismatic the perfect hobby for all collectors.

My opinion. :-)))))

Hi Kurt, Dick & Marc, ok new to this site!

Lots of pennies in the 50's & 60's have that clash, we call it Hagning 5 (in that case, because it is a 5) and yes it is caused by the reverse die, the chin of QUEII.

Kurt, your picture is quit good, can I use it in my coin book?

Thanks!

Pierre, welcome to the forum! We need folks like you to make it easier for folks like me, with vision problems, to use a book , rather than the CDROM. I have it, (the CDROM. I got it as soon as it came out. I actually wanted the book, but got the CD0ROM). There are too many questions, and too little time, and space here, but the main thing is, you are here! Again I say, "welcome"!
EDIT: I just thought that you might like to checj on "our" other forum: coppercoins.com. You will see what we do, "south of the border",, and see our great amount of varieties on site there. "Just tell them Dick sent you"! LOL
