It is machine damage to the LIBERTY after the coin was struck. Note how the devices are reduced in size.

On a doubled die the hub doubling increases the size of the devices.

I am new here and to coin collecting. I did try looking at other post about similar coins. I saw something about the mint having old machine or grease? I do see what looks like doubling Does anyone have info about this coin?

Devices are letters and numbers on a coin. The bust is usually referred to as that term, building, branches, torch, are often used as the design on a coin. Hope this helps. You are correct. The letters on the motto (also devices) are partly filled. But in order to be special, a high percentage (80-95%) of the devices need to be blocked out in order for it to be interesting.

It is actually not larger larger, the overall size of the device is normal, but the mark on the lower part is what I see as a reduction of the device. Here is another example of a cent with MD:

The die movement after the strike reduces an area of the normal device, reducing the devices. A doubled die is a die issue. The MD examples are an issue after the strike, the dies swing over and damage the devices. Often not the same on each device.

Note on these examples, the reduction is stronger on the left device than on the devices towards the right?

When you do, it will leap out at you. It is then you will realize how hard you were looking to find something wasn't there on all the coins you view before. But hand in there. It will get easier. Training your eye will take time.
