I am in Attleboro, MA 15 minutes east of Providence, RI, 45 minutes south of Boston.

I am new to coins. I have a metal detector and I think it would be very cool to find some old coins. Does anyone have advice for a new person to coin and metal detecting where I should try to look for old coins?

Thank you,
Ben

I've never metal detected, but I live in the general vicinity . I've seen people detecting at local baseball fields. Not sure the laws, but capron park or the school behind it could have potential

If the parks aren't posted, go right ahead.
I've been detecting for years with no problem on public sites.
Make sure you know the proper etiquette and how to properly dig and replace a dirt plug.

Based on my experience, the best spots to detect are private city yards. I door knock to get permission.
Good luck.
