The die crack means nothing in value - the steps being washed out is a coin that looks like a late die state! Nothing to have a premium to it!

Quote: Does that detract from its collectability and value or enhance it? It likely has a minimal effect either way and certainly doesn't hurt the value. Some collectors like die cracks.

May be the best looking 1943 S Jefferson that I have seen. Congrats!

As was mentioned - watch the steps. They are the best reference for strike and length of time the die was used.
Sharp steps = early die and firm strike. Note than 1943-S has gazillions of examples in BU.
All said - this is a nice example.

I believe the coin used here for the Optimizer is an S mint wartime nickel that has a crack. During the war years, the dies were run to the extreme and many developed cracks. Often time, a crack is used to help diagnose a variety specimen. The crack adds interest to some collectors, especially those looking for a $ mint specimen, but a detractor for other collectors looking for 'perfect' specimens. As noted, the steps are the key differentiator for 'perfect' specimens for the series. Nice looking specimen. I hope you got yours for a reasonable bid!

I think I got a great deal...... $12.00 for 4 nickels + $3.00 S&H. This one....and a 1944D BU Full Steps with a step ding and some unknown spots, plus a 1945S AU, and a 1942P AU non silver. I will try to get more photos up tonight.
