A guy at work wants to send in a few coins to get graded but I've never had any interest in this so I couldn't help him. I told him I'd ask around though and see what I could find out so I'd appreciate any help anyone could throw out here.

First off I know that one of the coins is the 1804 quarter I mentioned a while back (the one the guy found in a box and was so proud to have gotten so nice and shiny). It was worn quite a bit and had some nasty scratches so between being cleaned and the scratches I'm guessing PCGS and NGC would body bag it. I guess the first question is if anyone would grade anything like this?

Second, I know he has some kind of Mexican coin he wants slabbed also so if any of the grading services do world coins I'd need that info too.

I guess I'd need the process to get the coin graded also. I think some require you to join a club or some such thing or else go through a dealer in the club but if he could send the coins in directly to the service that would be a plus.

Thanks in advance. Mark

Well if you go the grading service website they will give you info on getting a coin graded. Also only send in the coin if its worth something because you don't want to have to pay $30 to get a $20 coin graded.

ANACS will grade problem coins (cleaned, filed, cut,or any other problem you can think of) I think ICG will do it now also, NCS will also slab problem coins and they are part of NGC but they are the conservation service NGC has and either you have to be a Collectors Society member or a member of ANA but PCGS and NGC will body bag any problem coin

Right now, NCS/NGC would probably be your best bet. With the major overhauls at ANACS and ICG, I wouldn't submit anything there until things settled down. Rumor has it that ANACS will no longer slab problem coins...but I don't know for sure. NGC will grade foreign coins, and NCS would slab that quarter as genuine, and give a details grade.

ANACS will grade problem coins as well as foreign coins. If you are willing to wait a few months using the economy service at ANACS you will pay $16/ coin, obviously with registered mail each way. I sent in a few US coins and a few foreign coins in mid January and just got them back this week. You did not need to join any club. I have been very happy with their grading.
