{This post might be a bit off-topic, but I figured this is the most logical forum (as opposed to General Discussion) for it. If I figured wrong, just let me know!}

My teenage daughter has become interested in photography. She has her mother's 1980s point-and-shoot camera, which she is learning how to use and enjoying taking pictures with - mainly people, animals, and nature scenes.

But she would also like to learn how to use a DSLR camera, so I'm thinking about buying a second lens for my Canon EOS Rebel XS, which I purchased for coin photography. I don't take photos of coins everyday, so sharing the camera seems like an economical way to go.

A Canon Knowledge Base document, Specifications of the EOS Digital Rebel XS, specifies the following under "Compatible Lenses":

Quote:
Canon EF lenses (including EF-S lenses) (35mm-equivalent focal length is approx. 1.6x the lens focal length)

and it recommends a Canon EF lens mount.

Naturally, a company ought to recommend its own products, but if y'all have recommendations for any specific lens mount and/or lens for this camera, Canon or otherwise, please let me know.

I'm also interested in any recommendations regarding best place(s) to purchase these items.

Thank you!

Mark

P.S. My camera does not currently have a memory card, which I assume I will need to purchase as well. If you have any suggestions for an SD card, I'm all ears. The Canon Knowledge Base has a document titled, Estimated memory card capacities for the EOS Digital Rebel XS if that's helpful.

I found a memory card on Amazon.com that seems to fit the bill, but please let me know if not (remembering that I am quite the noob when it comes to photography).

SanDisk 32GB Ultra Class 10 SDHC UHS-I Memory Card Up to 80MB, Grey/Black (SDSDUNC-032G-GN6IN)

¡Gracias de nuevo!

I'd recommend the 18-55mm EF-S lens. Used on ebay they should run <$50.

Before getting a 64GB card, make sure the old Rebel XS supports cards bigger than 32 GB.

Ah good point. I ordered a 64 GB SanDisk SD card, but my camera could not format it.

Here's why, per a post on the Canon support forum:

Topic: my rebel XS won't format sandisk memory card 64GB / OP wrote: I have never bought a card with this much GB. But the camera wont format it. Too much GB or bad card and I'm making a trip back to the store. Please help.

// Bob responded on 09-06-2015 at 12:29 AM:

That's an SDXC card. Your Rebel XS camera will accept SD or SDHC cards only.

SD cards are up to 16GB and use the FAT12 filesystem.
SDHC cards are up to 32GB and use the FAT32 filesystem.
SDXC cards are 32GB to 2TB and use the exFAT filesystem.

You have an older camera which was manufactured before the SDXC standard existed and, as such, your camera does not know how to deal with those cards.

Most people here will urge you not to use a card that large anyway, because it can be a temptation to engage in risky behavior. Like putting an entire important photo shoot on a single card or leaving files on a card too long before copying them to a computer.

Well, nothing like experience to learn about these details.

My daughter loves the lens I bought from Dave700x.

She has taken a ton of pictures and has taught me how to use features of my camera that I did not know existed.

Thanks for all your help everyone!

~ Mark
