This has to be my least favorite date/mm combination of all American coinage.

Every time I get one of these in change, I read the first three digits of the date and get excited, thinking it's silver, and then the final number is a 5, not a 4.

I don't like them either, but the occasional bu/as I find in rolls can be fun.

I don't mind them. The color's usually distinct enough not to get my hopes up before I read the date, and it's kind of neat seeing a 52-year-old coin in circulation that's still only worth face.

Actually, now that I think about it, that is kind of neat. I wonder how long until they get a premium?

I remember when the new clad quarter was released into circulation, and how exciting/amazed I was when I received my first 1965 Brand New Quarter and wondered how they could sandwich the copper between the outer layers..

For me this was one of those "Where were you when you received your first clad coin", and it was at a Saturday night Bingo Game in Haverstraw, New York..

It was also common to find Indian cents and other Coinage from this time period still in circulation..

I feel so old

I'll save any that are in near-mint condition.

I like them because they're generally the most-worn coins I find in circulation. Worn coins have more personality, in my opinion.

Fun fact: Despite a mintage of 1.8 BILLION business strikes, PCGS has only graded 503 examples in MS60 or better. Of those 503 coins, only 253 are MS66 or better, and the top of the pop is 23 MS67 examples, of which, a MS67+ is #1 finest.

In other words, .00000001264% of all 1965 Washington quarter business strikes have been graded MS67(+), without a single known MS68 example. The lone MS67+ was sold for $3,450 by DLRC, and the MS67 examples have been selling for $300-$800. That's a lot of money for such a common coin; whether you consider that a condition scarcity or an artificial rarity is all a matter of your perspective.

By way of comparison, the ultra-rare 1964 SMS Washington, of which only 60 sets are known to exist (i.e. 60 quarters), has had SP67 examples selling in the $5000-$7000 range, only 8-10x above the infinitely more common 1965 business strike in the same grade despite the huge rarity gap. If you settle for one of the SP66 graded examples, you can probably pick one up cheaper than the PCGS MS67+ 1965 business strike that DLRC sold (the last SP66 sold in 2011 @ HA for $4K in a MUCH stronger market.)

I too will read the first three digits and my heart will skip a beat, and then I realize.

I sometimes think, if only it were a year older! But I also think like this on coins that could have graded higher, if only it had a better strike, or not this one ding

I really like the 1965s. They are a model example of coinage use in our modern society. Being the most used coin in circulation, from parking meters to vending and laundry machines, these coins have stood the test of time for 52 years yet and I'm excited to see just how far they will go into the future. There's no way you'd get the same kind of mileage out of silver.

I always look for the 1965 DDO and DDR!

FS-25-1965-101 (026), CONECA: DDO-001
FS-25-1965-102, CONECA: DDO-002
FS-25-1965-801, CONECA: DDR-001

Big premiums!
