I hope this thread doesn't turn into a "high school point and laugh festival" and end up getting locked, as there is an important (perhaps more important than karma) underlying detail in the story that I want to hear about in the future. That is regarding the person(s) selling the coins to Mr.Kijiji in the first place.
I for one am more interested in those details than hearing about a dog that caught fleas.

BTW, thank you Mike for your efforts.

I too hope that this does not turn into a laugh festival, but that appears to be the reason it was started in the first place was to once again poke fun at myself. I was tipped off to this thread by Jimmy with personal email message to me which read "There is an interesting article in the CCF under the "Canadian Coins, Tokens & Bank Notes" thread you should read. You just made somebody's day. I was somewhat offended by the post since it was only being done to get a laugh. It was myself who led this seller to Mike after he contacted me with an 1875H and an 1889 Canadian quarter to sell. I was suspicious about the coins and suggested that he contact Mike himself to have them checked out. It turned out that my feeling was right about these coins. Mike has suggested that it should have been I who contacted the police, but without any information on the sellers full name and address and the fact that I was only suspicious of the coins, I could not do that. It seems that even after Mike has looked at the coins and deemed them as fakes that the seller still has procession of them and is going to seek a second opinion ( or not) and may still try to sell them. In the past year, I have had 3 opportunities to contact authorities. First was when I turned the fake Superman set into the RCMP to be destroyed. They did take them but told me that they did not see any reason why they should. Second: in August of 2016 I was offered a 1976 Olympic set. The seller was in a great hurry to get rid of it cheap. I was at work and could not meet this person until the next day, so I offered them more money if they held it, The seller agreed and then an hour later informed me that they had sold it for the original price. They also told me not to worry because they may be getting more. I thought at this time that they may have been stolen. I contacted the local police with the information and they were not interested in looking into it. Third was recently when an ad appeared on the Facebook page Worldwide coin buy and sell. A person in the USA was offering counterfeit banknotes for many countries which they claimed were so good that they were undetectable. I again went to the RCMP to see if they were able to contact the FBI about this and was told that they had little concern about it even though Canadian banknotes were in the ad. I have since contacted the local police in the US city where the ad poster lived. Facebook themselves pulled the ad down in 48 hours after it was posted. My experience with the police is that the care very little about this problem. If anything happens as a result of finding the source of these 2 fake quarters in Trenton , it is because I took the time to lead the seller in the right direction, but I have yet to be given any credit for doing this. The only thing that has happened is that it has poked fun at myself.

Getting Duped with a counterfeit is NOT funny, it is embarrassing and hurtful and I think that just about any serious collector has gone through this experience at one time or another.
This is why it is vital that the offending coins are destroyed and other collectors are warned about the particular coins in question So that at least No other collector can be hurt with the coins.
A bit like shooting a Rabid Dog.
This is the very least we can all do as collectors, To resell these abominations is just "Wrong" on so many levels.

Yes you will loose whatever money you spent on the counterfeit But just think back on how "mad" and "Hurt" you were when you found out that the prized coin you just bought was a worthless fake before you consider "Handballing" it onto some other collector.
To resell these horrors makes you just as bad if not worse that the original seller.
Mike is doing us ALL a great service through education and proactively seeking out the perpetrators of these counterfeits and I have nothing but admiration for what he is doing.
IF we all become more vigilant about these counterfeits and do something about them then at least we should be able to stem the flow of them somewhat.
Just ignoring them or worse, Selling them on to some other unsuspecting collector is totally unacceptable behaviour.

Am I understanding this correctly, in that an ONA executive member, whose initials are 'CC' is the original seller of these fakes and he is fully aware of these coins as being fake?

No, I am not the original seller of these fakes, Have you taken the time to read through the posts. I was contacted by someone offering these too me and I told them to take them to Mike to get them looked at since I suspected that they were fake. Please read my previous post.

qaz .. my hat is off to you for your efforts and knowing where to go with Mikey. It's a shame that other ONA and RCNA folks don't put more of an effort into getting these fakes out of circulation or at least making people aware.... so far it has been only lip service so that a 10 second sound bite looks good to readers. Even though the police seem to have little interest in it now, if enough complaints come into them, they will start to feel the pressure of an inquiring public. Again, thanks for your efforts.

My concern is for the 1875H and 1889 quarter from this seller which Mike has also deemed fake. From what I gather, he does not believe in Mikes opinion and says he will seek another, which means that he is still in possession of them. I will destroy the 1858 since it is not in my best interest to keep it.

Thanks okiecoiner for the support. I learned my lesson last year and have looked out for others selling fakes. I did get burned with the 1858 and blame myself for not being more careful. I have though been discouraged by the apparent lack of concern both by local police and the RCMP since I have been to them three times in the past year and been given the cold shoulder.

I would like to test it with my XRF in my lab. I am curious to see if it is bronze or copper... and I also want to see it destroyed. Might a suggest a simple solution to kill two birds here?

Cut the coin in half, and send me one half to test with the XRF.... Send me a PM if that is something you can do for me, and I'll pay for the postage.

I'm a bit confused here about fakes, maybe you experts can set me straight. In the past few months I've gathered some obvious fake US $1.00 coins to use as "hole fillers" in a Capital plastics type set. I in no way can afford the 3 early 1800's dollars' prices. They are very obvious cast copies although older as to not be stamped "COPY". Two were sold as cast copies, one was labeled "counterfeit" on 2x2 bought at auction. Is it OK for me to possess these coins? I assumed it was, one came from a reputable dealer who I'd have thought would have said something if it were a problem.
Fantasy coins perhaps?

Crazy... no it's not right that you have Counterfeits... what if you suddently pass and your estate is auctioned off and these are sold as legit coins..... it happens...

For all scenarios it ends bad to the next buyer of the coins.... hence why Counterfeits and copies are not good for this hobby..
