I saw something strange about a penny I had in my pocket.
Looking with a magnifying glass, I noticed the mint mark has been double stamped. I looked again under a micro scope as well.
There is dirt build up in the grooves, but I think these photos show it clear enough.
I'm not an avid collector. Would like feedback on where I might get more information on it.
Thanks for any advice.

As it is showing in other areas as well, I would say zinc rot underneath the copper plating causing a bubble or crater of sorts. There are '84-d RPMs but they don't look like that.

Is there a way to clean the grime off without doing any damage?

Unfortunately no as far as I'm aware. It's corrosion of the inner core of zinc and spending it is the best option.

The coin is suffering from split plating on the mint mark. When the oxygen gets to the zinc under the plating it has started an decaying process. No need to save this one. It is a spender.
