The composition of all of them is cupro-nickel..75% copper and 25% nickel.

Here are a few websites that I personally like:

http://24carat.co.uk/britishorengli...nsframe.html

http://www.tclayton.demon.co.uk/index.html

And two books that I recommend are the Spink Catalogue of British coins and the Coincraft Catalogue of English and UK Coins.

It should be pointed out that for King George VI and Queen ELizabeth II, there were two different designs of British shilling, issued at the same time. One had an "English design", the other had a "Scottish design". For QEII, the difference is fairly subtle. "English" shillings (KM# 904) have three small lions on the shield, "Scottish" ones (KM# 905) have a single large lion.

It only make a difference for 1958 and 1959. The '58 English is slightly scarce, while the '59 Scottish is slightly scarce. All other dates of both types are quite common.
