Hello! I'm very new to grading. I've got a bunch of coins to go through so I'm hoping to get better at doing it myself. This one jumped out of the book of silver dollars at me. It is really shiny, but it has a fingerprint mark at the top of the coin. I tried to capture this better in the white background image. How badly does this hurt it? Thanks for any advice. I took these images with my scanner, I can use my camera if that's better.    Camera Pictures really hard to get a clear shot all my house lighting is halogen recessed lighting that isn't playing well with a super shiny coin.   Edited by tansy25 01/18/2017 12:01 am

Please do use your camera. Scanner pictures usually make a coin look worse than it is.

And use acetone dipped in a q-tip to remove the fingerprint. Use 100% pure acetone, not fingernail polish remover.

Thanks for the advice!! I'll see if I can track down some acetone. I uploaded some pictures from my camera to the original post.

 To the CCF!! Nice looking Morgan. I give it a MS63 Edit...Unless the fingerprint was just put on there, it is probably there to stay. I don't believe acetone will help.

Quote: Unless the fingerprint was just put on there, it is probably there to stay.  I've had absolutely no luck using (pure) acetone on old fingerprints. But, as coin197 says, it's always worth a shot because it will not harm the coin. Still, it's a very high grade coin!

As you probably know, do not use anything but acetone when cleaning coins, unless you ask the CCF first. Don't use baking powder, vinegar, erasers, toothpicks, sponges, toothbrushes, or wire brushes. When I was younger, I made a mistake and used all of the above on my coins.

It looks 63 or so. That fingerprint is etched into the surface like 99.99% of them and will not come off. Since it's a relatively low value coin you could try acetone without worrying too much about hurting it.

 tansy! MS-63 and as others have mentioned acetone can't hurt. Might not help but it's always worth a try.

Thanks for all the input and welcomes :) Does it change anything if this coin is so shiny I can read text reflected on it? It's the only one in a book full that has that kind of shine and why I had so much trouble getting pictures of it. Really enjoying going through all of these coins! I received some stamps too so my desk is a disaster of coins and stamps :)
