Looks like you figured out is was machine damage to the bust after the strike. The die movement, damaged it.

That is what I figured out. I did some reading
on machine damage just after I posted. I also learned
alot about the difference between mechanical doubled die
and and real doubled die. Great to know
.

to the forum!

Seeing black marker arrows on a digital photo made my brain hurt a little bit, just woke up.
I see now that's not what they are, but it really had me tilting my head for a second.

To me it looks like a very high bounce after the strike. Does the motto letters show any of this? If not, it bounced high enough to miss them. Whacked George pretty bad though....
Rest in Peace

Machine Doubling this severe does have value. I do not consider it "damage" but a legitimate striking error. Just because the doubling occurs after the hammer die reaches the lowest point of its downstroke doesn't mean it's not related to the strike.
Error coin writer and researcher.

Now there's an interesting perspective. It's doubling caused by a striking error during the strike. Machine Doubling.

I will post some more pictures soon. I used a magnifier app with my phones camera to get this photo. Its the only way I can take photos of coins right now. Still working on getting better pictures with this method.

It's still a very nice Machine Doubled quarter. If you can envision George's face without the doubling, you'll see it is reduced. Compare it with another quarter if you need to. If it was a Doubled Die the doubling would enlarge it. Here's a good picture made by Coop that illustrates that.
