Hey there...

I am getting back into coin collecting, and am going through an old jar I have old a bunch of international coins and found the following UK coins:

Half Crowns: 1950, 1957, 1961 (well circulated)
Two Shillings:1953, 1957, 1961 (well circulated)
One Shilling: 1955, 1957 (well circulated)
Six Pence: 1957, 1966
One Penny: 1907, 1922 (both fairly 'worn')

No idea if any of these are worth anything, or if perhaps there may be some 'silver' in any of them.

Need to decide if I should cash them in, and if so, what they could be worth. Or, if they are worth 'saving'.

Thanks so much.

Hi and from England!

I'm sorry but none of these coins is of any particular value - they are the sort that were in general use up to the adoption of decimal currency by the UK in 1971, and can nowadays be found in dealers' cheap trays or junk boxes. None has any silver content: the UK abandoned the use of silver for circulating coins way back in 1947! They make a nice souvenir of Old England, though!

Take a look at the 1955 and 1957 shillings. If the shield has three lions on it, they are English, if there is only one lion, they are Scottish. This doesn't make them of any extra value, but may interest you!

Thanks so much for the fast response, and at least "now I know"..

I was hoping because of the dates there may be some 'silver', since I know most pre-1965 silver coins in the US contain silver, but guess UK gave that up long before the US.

Regards,

Michael
